چکیده

Acoustic data are presented from a prosodic database containing data from 3 French speakers. The prosodic boundaries examined are the Utterance, the Intonational Phrase, the Accentual Phrase, and the Word. The aim is to study the interaction of coarticulatory effects with prosodic effects. The vowel /a/ before the prosodic boundary and the consonants /b d I f s 5/ after the prosodic boundary are examined. It is found that the vowel duration is greatly affected by the strength of the prosodic boundary, but consonant duration less so. The duration of the fricative consonants is more stable than the stop consonants. Formant values suggest that /a/ is lower and more back the stronger the prosodic boundary, and that the vowel is more likely to reach its low target following a bilabial consonant /b f/. Based on an examination of formant values, the velar stop /I/ appears to have much variability in the front-back dimension. Finally, there is a strong negative correlation between duration and mean velocity of the formant transition, and this effect is strongly related to the strength of the prosodic boundary.

Features of Prosodic Hierarchy Boundary between Uygur and Mandarin Chinese

The study explored the perception and acoustic features of prosodic hierarchy boundaries in Uygur and Mandarin Chinese. The results of the perception study showed that native speakers of Mandarin Chinese were more sensitive to prosodic hierarchy boundaries than native speakers of Uygur. The results of a detailed acoustic analysis indicated that the acoustic features of Uygur prosodic hierarchy ...

The aim of this paper is to present a systematical analysis of the acoustic correlates of hierarchical prosodic boundaries. This analysis is based on a large labeled corpus of Mandarin Chinese. The acoustic correlates include the lowest value of pitch and the duration of the silence. The prosodic structure is defined thanks to a perception experiment. The main results are : a) the declination o...

Acoustic cues to prosodic boundaries in Yami: A first look

It is well known that in many Indo-European languages speakers manipulate acoustic cues to encode different prosodic phrase boundaries. However, no such attempt has been made to investigate these effects in Austronesian languages. Therefore, this paper reports on preliminary research on the prosodic structure of Yami, an endangered Austronesian language spoken on Orchid Island, Taiwan. Two acou...
